PLEASANT SURPRISE. Former Adamson players Axel Inigo and Kimlee Bayquin delivered big-time contributions for FEU.
Far Eastern University leaned on a total team effort for their first win in their title defense in the UAAP 79 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Coming off a defeat to start the season, the defending champions counted five players who scored at least five points and two of the most pleasant surprises were little-known Axel Inigo and Kimlee Bayquin.
The ironic thing was, Inigo and Bayquin turned in their best performances as Tamaraws at the expense of the Adamson University they had belonged to in years past. Even coach Nash Racela candidly expressed, “Si Kimlee and Axel are both from Adamson so I actually want to thank Adamson for them.”
He then continued, “They really helped us today.”
Inigo was the Soaring Falcons’ starting pointman three years ago. He did not and still has not divulged details of his transfer and simply said, “Gusto ko lang talaga maglaro para sa FEU. Wala namang issue sa paglipat ko.”
The now 22-year-old was also quick to clarify that he didn’t have extra motivation in facing his former team. As he put it, “Nag-enjoy lang ako sa game. Respeto lang din sa Adamson kaya gusto kong magpakita ng laro.”
On the other hand, Bayquin never suited up in the UAAP for the Falcons, but spent a season in their Team B. As such, he was nothing but thankful to FEU for hiving him a chance as he said, “Nagtiyaga lang talaga ako. Blessed din ako na tinanggap ako ng FEU at binigyan ako ng scholarship.”
Like Inigo, however, the now 21-year-old said he harbored no ill feelings toward his previous school. “Wala namang extra motivation ngayon. Team player lang ako,” he said.
Bottom line, Bayquin said he was just returning the faith that coach Nash Racela has placed in him. “Kung ginagawa mo sa practice yung tama, bibigyan ka ni coach Nash ng chance. Ayun nga, ni-grab ko lang yung opportunity,” he said.
Inigo could only agree. “Nag-deliver lang ako para kay coach Nash dahil ni-lineup niya ako at binigyan niya ako ng trust na maglaro,” he expressed.
