NO CHANGE. UST now owns a 19-game winning streak against UP.
The University of the Philippines has not defeated the University of Sto. Tomas in a decade.
That won’t be changing in the UAAP 79 Men’s Basketball Tournament – until the second round, at least.
Drawing surprising yet timely makes from little-known Reggie Boy Basibas and Oliver De Guzman, the Growling Tigers withstood a late rally by the Maroons for a well-earned 83-77 decision on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Losing a lead of as much as 11 and all of a sudden finding themselves in a dogfight at 71-all, coach Boy Sablan inserted reserves Basibas and De Guzman. The two wasted no time in making their presence felt and connived for back-to-back hits that jumpstarted an 8-0 push for a 79-72 advantage in favor of UST.
The lead would prove to be more than enough for a much-needed bounce-back win for the Tigers who lost by 38 points in their most recent outing. “Dumating ulit yung sipag namin na nawala nung La Salle. Kailangan naming magpakita ng character pagkatapos nun,” Sablan said, satisfied by the effort of his Tigers who now stand at 2-2.
Basibas and De Guzman wound up with 11 points apiece while Louie Vigil provided impact all throughout for a total of 18 points, six rebounds, and seven assists. Vigil, the team captain, was nothing but proud of his little-known teammates, expressed, “It’s a good feeling kapag nakikita mo ang contribution ng bawat isa.”
He then continued, “It’s a team effort talaga.”
With the win, the Espana-based squad re-asserted their mastery over their foes from Diliman. UST has now come out on top in all of their last 19 matchups with UP.
Jett Manuel topped the scoring column for the Maroons with 19 points. He only had five points in the second half, however, to see his squad stay winless through three games.
