Bulldogs chop down Tigers, remain unbeaten
National University bagged its second win to keep a tight hold of the early lead in the 79th UAAP men's badminton.

Three-peat seeking National University smashes its way to its second straight win as the Bulldogs remained unscathed in the opening weekend of the 79th UAAP men’s badminton tournament at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.

NU blanked the University of Sto. Tomas Growling Tigers to improve to 2-0 win-loss mark and for the Bulldogs’ 20th straight tie victory overall since 2014. The squad under new mentor Jaime Llanes routed the Adamson University Falcons, 5-0, Saturday.

University of the Philippines, meanwhile, is making its presence felt with its second straight win in as many outings to tie NU on top of the standings.

The Fighting Maroons turned back last year's runner-up De La Salle, 4-1, as a fitting follow up to the Diliman-based squad’s 4-1 romp over Ateneo de Manila.

In other results, the Blue Eagles vented its ire on Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 4-1, while University of the East Red Warriors squeezed past the Falcons, 3-2.

Ateneo and UE are on a four-way tie at 1-1 with UST and DLSU while FEU and Adamson dropped to 0-2.

In women's badminton, titleholder UP defeated Ateneo, 4-1, in an early rematch of last season's Finals to stretch its perfect run to 19 ties.

NU defeated Adamson University, 4-1, De La Salle blanked FEU, 5-0, while UST bested UE, 4-1, in other opening day matches in the distaff side.
