After cramps, Racela readying Arong for more minutes
EXTRA EFFORT. Monbert Arong needs to be more prepared for a heavier workload as well as greater expectations as FEU's possible go-to-guy.

Monbert Arong was taking over in the last two minutes on Saturday as Far Eastern University was trying to keep at bay desperate University of the East.

Unfortunately, after scoring all but two of the Tamaraws’ last eight points, the graduating guard had for himself an awkward landing and had to be carried by teammates back to the bench.

The defending champions eventually managed to finish off the Red Warriors, but did not get their emerging finisher back to the action.

Post-game, Arong was able to walk by his own power – still with a noticeable limp, however. “Cramps lang sa parehas na calf muscle. Siguro, sa excitement sa laro,” he said.

He then continued, “Pero okay lang, pahinga lang kasi malayo pa yung game namin.”

For his part, when asked about what happened, coach Nash Racela said his slashing swingman may have been surprised with his heavier workload. “I think na-stretch yung minutes ni Monbert today. In the first few games, he was just averaging 10 minutes.

Indeed, Arong – who was simply the sensational sixth man behind the core of Mac Belo, RR Pogoy, and Mike Tolomia in FEU’s championship season – played 26 minutes.

Now without that core, the Tamaraws are only looking for greater things from the Cebuano. As Racela put it, “We envision him to play longer. It’s nice that today, he was able to deliver with the minutes entrusted to him.”

Even with the cramps, Arong wound up with a career-high 16 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists. And even with the cramps, he said he’s ready for more, “Nabigla lang ako today kasi ‘di ko in-expect na mataas yung minutes.”

He then continued, “Pero nagpapasalamat ako kina coach at sa mga teammates ko kasi may tiwala sila sakin. Kaya gagawin ko ang lahat kasi last year ko na ngayon e.”
