Game-by-game in the UAAP 79 Men’s Basketball Tournament, a different player has been stepping up for Ateneo de Manila University.
That didn’t change on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena as point guard Anton Asistio and his career-high 21 points proved more than enough to propel the Blue Eagles past the University of the East, 84-69.
Asistio got nine of his points from the free throw line where he was perfect.
He wasn’t alone in taking advantage of the freebies, however, as Ateneo made good on 35 of their 52 free throws. The 52 attempts are the most in a single game in over a decade in the UAAP.
Still, the Red Warriors were battling behind rookie Alvin Pasaol who wound up also with a career-high 22 points. Leading by two at the midway mark of the third, however, they fell victim to the Eagles’ 22-8 onslaught to end the quarter.
Ateneo would never be threatened the rest of the way en route to their third win in five games – yet again avoiding a losing skid.
The same cannot be said for UE who have now dropped all five of their outings in the season.
