TAKING FLIGHT. Thirdy Ravena played his best game of the season thus far just as Ateneo was heading into a rivalry game with DLSU.

While their neighboring rivals were leaning on two guys and two guys alone, Ateneo de Manila University counted on many stars to show the way to a continued ascent in the UAAP 79 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

No star shone brightest on Wednesday at the MOA Arena than Thirdy Ravena who posted his second collegiate double-double all while leading the Blue Eagles to a 79-64 victory versus University of the Philippines.

Showing off all in his arsenal, the second-year swingman topped his squad in points with 22 as well as in rebounds with 10.

However, it wasn’t until Ravena’s chasedown block on Javi Gomez de Liano that Ateneo was finally able to pull away. The Maroons were only pursuing a four-point disadvantage until the resounding rejection sparked a 15-4 charge that ballooned their lead to 77-60.

Chibueze Ikeh and Anton Asistio chipped in 14 and 10 points, respectively, as the Eagles were once again the victors in the Battle of Katipunan.

Moreover, Ateneo’s latest win moved them into solo second now at 4-2. With back-to-back wins, they have all the momentum as they head into a rivalry game with league-leading De La Salle University.

Satisfied with his wards, coach Sandy Arrespacochaga said, “We had some rough patches, we also had stretches where we played well. Of course, we’d like to minimize the rough patches.”

The same team effort could not be said for UP who only had Paul Desiderio and Jett Manuel as effective players. The two combined for 42 points in their output which proved far from enough from preventing their fifth loss in six games.
