SETTING THE STANDARD. Long-time contender DLSU got the better of upstart UE.

De La Salle University just met the new kids on the block in the UAAP 79 Womens Basketball Tournament.

The University of the East left quite a first impression, but the long-time contenders still had more than enough to have the last laugh.

Khate Castillo scattered 21 points built on six triples and the Lady Archers’ hot opening salvo sustained them through the fighting Lady Warriors for a 74-72 decision on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.

The Taft-based team started strong and owned a 10-point lead after the first only to somewhat lift their foot off the pedal.

UE battled back with a 20-11 third quarter and pulled to within two points. Castillo and Camille Claro held down the fort for DLSU, however, as the two teams got themselves locked in stalemate in the final frame.

Claro finished with 17 points and six assists while Snow Penaranda kept piling double-doubles with 11 points and 10 rebounds this time around.

With the win, the Lady Archers improved to 5-1 and unshackled from the tie they were in with the Lady Warriors who now drop to 4-2. The latter is second while the former is third behind still perfect two-time defending champion National University.

Meanwhile, last year’s runners-up Ateneo de Manila University suffered a second straight setback, this time a 40-42 decision to the University of the Philippines.

Jeanine Bautista, Daphne Esplana, and Patty Pesquera all scored eight points to make sure the Lady Maroons came out on top in the war of attrition and scored sweet win number one. On the other hand, the Lady Eagles spiraled downward to 2-4.
