HIGH PRAISE. Tab Baldwin sees two DLSU players as the top player in all of the UAAP.
De La Salle University recorded the largest margin of victory in 11 years in the country’s most heated rivalry on Sunday at the MOA Arena.
Crushing archrival Ateneo de Manila University by 16 points, the Green Archers finished up a first round sweep.
According to Blue Eagles’ mentor Tab Baldwin, however, the decision itself wasn’t surprising. As he put it, “I think, overall, we played a tough game, we played a hard game. But I think the better team won.”
He then continued, “La Salle has got a loaded roster. They have great maturity and great physical strength.”
The American-Kiwi then went on to single out two DLSU players. “They have two players who you can’t separate and who I believe are the two best players in the UAAP – Jeron Teng and Ben Mbala,” he said.
He then continued, “Those two guys are really setting a gold standard for the best players in the UAAP.”
Teng was sidelined by an injury and was unable to showcase his skills firsthand to the Ateneo coach, but Mbala’s impact was in full effect. The hulking Cameroonian totaled 28 points, 13 rebounds, five steals, one block, and more than a few dunks to fuel the all-out domination.
In the end, Baldwin acknowledged that he and the Eagles need to go back to the drawing board. “We have to develop a gameplan where we can minimize the talent disparity. We can force them to play our style, but they are so good in imposing their style,” he said.
He also added, “It’s not going to be easy.”
