BROTHERLY LOVE. Franz Pumaren gifted manong Derrick with his first win in the UAAP 79 Men's Basketball Tournament.

On the seventh try, coach Derrick Pumaren finally registered win number one in the UAAP 79 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Bright and beaming as he entered his first post-win interview of the season on Sunday at the MOA Arena, he expressed, “I thought I wouldn’t be seeing you guys in the first round.”

University of the East’s long-awaited and much-wanted climb to 1-6 wasn’t all smiles for Pumaren, however, as their breakthrough came against Adamson University – the upstart squad coached by younger brother Franz. “I feel bad about Franz. We really had to get our first win sa kanya,” he said.

Manong Derrick was quick to clarify, however, that as always, there was no added motivation in matching up with his sibling. “It’s nothing personal. We needed to win because we’re in a deep hole and we have to crawl out of it,” he said.

He then continued, “It doesn’t matter if it’s Franz or other teams, we still have to win games.”

For his part, the younger Pumaren said he is nothing but willing to admit that his kuya won fair and square. As he rued after the game, “They got their first win off us. I think we didn’t do what we were supposed to be doing.”

As it turns out, Franz already had a feeling this was happening. “Actually, coming into this game, I was feeling some sort of tightness. That’s the first time I felt that in the last six games so I knew it was gonna be a dogfight,” he said.

He then continued, “I think they’re a very disciplined and very aggressive team. That’s his team for the last how many years.”

The eldest Pumaren had the same sort of praise for the Soaring Falcons. “They’ve got good pieces and Franz is a good coach. We know what he can do and that’s why he’s able to turn to the team around,” he said.
