University of Sto. Tomas' Cherry Rondina tips the ball over the defense of University of the Philippines' Diana Carlos.

University of Sto. Tomas kept its unbeaten record intact by sweeping erstwhile co-leader University of the Philippines, 21-17, 21-14, Sunday night for solo top spot in the 79th UAAP women's beach volleyball tournament at the Sands SM By The Bay.

The Tigresses' tandem of Cherry Rondina and Jem Gutierrez collected their fourth straight victory in as many outing after two days of action while handing the Lady Maroons duo of Diana Carlos and Arielle Estrañero their first loss in in four games.

"Nag-uusap lang kami ni Ate Jem na manalo o matalo laban lang tayo at ilabas lang natin yung tini-training natin," said Rondina, who won the tournament title in Season 77 on her rookie year. "Nag-teamwork lang talaga kami ni Ate Jem."

Rondina and new partner Gutierrez, who replaced Rica Rivera, turned back Tin Tiamzon and Desiree Cheng of defending champion De La Salle, 21-15, 21-16, in the morning match.

The Lady Maroons failed to followup their morning victory against Judith Abil and Angelica Dacaymat of University of the East, 21-16, 22-20.

Far Eastern University and National University, meanwhile, stayed within reach of the joint leaders after posting contrasting victories.

Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza continued their rise from their season-opening loss to the Lady Spikers, as the Lady Tamaraws ripped Ateneo's Michelle Morente and Kim Gequillana, 21-18, 21-13.

Aiko Urdas and Roma Doromal of the Lady Bulldogs rallied from an opening-set loss to outlast Jema Galanza and Bernadette Flora of Adamson University, 20-22, 21-12, 15-12.

FEU and NU shared third spot with identical 2-1 slates.  The Lady Eagles and the Lady Spikers dropped at 1-2, while the Lady Falcons and the Lady Warriors are winless in three contests.

In the men's division, the Growling Tigers and the Tamaraws are on top of the heap with four straight wins.

UST's KR Guzman and Anthony Arbasto trounced Cris Dumago and Wayne Marco of De La Salle, 21-13, 21-12, before turning back the Maroons tandem of Alfred Valbuena and Wendel Miguel, 21-13, 21-14, for a 4-0 record after two days of action.

FEU's Jude Garcia and Richard Solis tripped Marck Espejo and Ish Polvorosa of titleholder Ateneo, 21-18, 21-17,  and buried the Red Warriors' Ruvince Abrot and Geric Ortega, 21-16, 21-16,  for the share of the lead.

In other matches, the Bulldogs tandem of Bryan Bagunas and Fauzi Ismail defeated Adamson University's Rence Melgar and John Philip Yude, 21-19, 21-17, before breezing past the Green Spikers, 21-10, 21-15, for a 3-1 record.

UP dropped UE, 21-10, 21-17, for a 2-2 slate tied with Adamson, which bounced back from its morning match loss with a come-from-behind 18-21, 26-24, 16-14 win over Ateneo.

The Blue Eagles are struggling in form with a 1-3 card while DLSU like UE is winless in four starts.
