Ateneo men's shuttlers nip DLSU, faces UP next
Ateneo will now take on University of the Philippines in the second stepladder semis on Saturday.

Ateneo de Manila University eliminated third seed De La Salle University, 3-2, in the first men's stepladder semifinals playoff to stay alive Wednesday in the UAAP Season 79 badminton tournament.

The Blue Eagles' Hanz Bernardo and Jan Mangubat broke the 1-1 standoff in the first doubles, beating the Green Archers' pair of Anton Cayanan and Joshua Monterubio, 21-19, 18-21, 21-19.

De La Salle's Kenneth Monterubio and Yel Pajarillo then made quick work of Ateneo's Carlo Remo and Patrick Gecosala, 21-15, 21-17, in the second doubles to get a lifeline.

But the Eagles won't be denied this time as Bernardo returned in the deciding third singles to beat Andrew Pineda of the Archers, 21-16, 21-16.

Ateneo took the lead after Mangubat bested Kenneth Monterubio in the first singles, 21-16, 21-17, before De La Salle leveled with Cayanan prevailing over Clarence Filart, 19-21, 21-19, 21-19.

In women's play, the third-ranked Lady Eagles swept the No. 2 Lady Archers, 3-0, to force a sudden-death tie for the other Finals berth on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.

Surviving two do-or-die ties, now goes the hard part for the Eagles.

Ateneo will now take on University of the Philippines in the second stepladder semis on Saturday.

Three-peat seeking National University is waiting in the wings, having won its seven elimination round tie to gain an outright passage in the best-of-three championship series.

The Fighting Maroons hold the twice-to-beat bonus in the second step-ladder semis against the Eagles after finishing second in the preliminaries with a 6-1 card.

Ateneo made it as the fourth seed with a 3-1 win over University of Santo Tomas in last Sunday's do-or-die playoff.

After a pair of runner-up finishes, De La Salle finished the season in fourth place.
