TOP DOG. NU is nearing another first round sweep.

Near the end of the first round of the UAAP 79 Women’s Basketball Tournament, there’s still no slowing down back-to-back champion National University.

Turning on the jets in the second quarter, the Lady Bulldogs boosted past and then zoomed far, far away from Far Eastern University all the way to an easy 80-69 win on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.

With their 38th consecutive victory dating back to 2014, NU is one win away from another first round sweep. Jack Animam made sure of that with a 17-point, 14-rebound power performance.

From a tied tally of 19-all early in the second, the Lady Bulldogs unleashed a deafening 25-4 stampede for a 44-25 advantage in their favor at halftime.

They would never be threatened the rest of the way. “You have to start good and finish stronger,” coach Pat Aquino expressed after the game.

Gemma Miranda chipped in 16 points of her own to help the two-time defending champions improve to 6-0. They try to close out the first round sweep against UST on Saturday.

Those Tigresses will be coming into that game fresh off a loss to Adamson University.

The Lady Falcons rode Kaye Pingol’s 17 points and eight rebounds to a 66-62 triumph over UST.

With the win, Adamson rose to 3-4 while their respective losses dropped both the Lady Tamaraws and the Tigresses to 2-4.
