University of Sto. Tomas swept both the men's and women's elimination round for outright spots in the Finals of the 79th UAAP beach volleyball at the Sands by the Bay on Friday.
The Golden Tigresses pair of Cherry Rondina and Jem Gutierrez rolled past Far Eastern University's Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza, 25-14, 25-15, for an unbeaten run to move two wins closer from reclaiming the title they lost last year.
UST will await the stepladder semis winner between twice-to-beat FEU and defending champion De La Salle in the best-of-three Finals series starting Saturday.
The Lady Spikers pair of Kim Fajardo and Tin Tiamzon outlasted FEU, 21-15, 19-21, 15-12, in a rematch of last year's championship showdown to force a do-or-die match Saturday morning.
DLSU won over Ateneo de Manila's Kim Gequillana and Michelle Morente, 21-19, 21-11, in the opening phase of the stepladder Final Four.
DLSU finished the elims with a 21-6, 21-16 win over Ateneo to tie its victim with 4-3 slate.
Meanwhile, the Tigers duo of KR Guzman and Anthony Arbasto trounced FEU's Jude Garcia and Richard Solis, 21-12, 21-19, for an outright Finals seat.
The Espana-based pair will take on the semis winner between University of the Philippines and FEU in the championship series Saturday.
The Tamaraws which played Garcia and reserve Jeremiah Barrica defeated National University's Madz Gampong and Fauzi Ismail, 21-18, 20-22, 15-10, in the knockout stepladder semis.
FEU needed a big comeback from a 3-6 deficit in the deciding frame.
UP's Alfred Valbuena and Wendel Miguel took the second spot and semis twice-to-beat advantage after taking down National University's Madz Gampong and Fauzi Ismail, 21-16, 21-19, for a 5-2 slate.
FEU secured the last semis spot with a 27-29, 21-17, 15-13, win over Adamson's Rence Melgar and John Philip Yude.
NU, FEU and Adamson closed the elims with identical 4-3 marks.
In other women's results, National University Lady Bulldogs' Aiko Urdas and Roma Doromal defeated Diana Carlos and Isa Molde of University of the Philippines, 25-19, 25-15, to close their campaign with a 3-4 record tied with the Lady Maroons.
Judith Abil and Angelica Dacaymat of University of the East ended their campaign on a winning note with a 21-10, 21-14, demolition of Adamson University pair of Jema Galanza and Bernadette Flora. UE and Adamson shared 7th to 8th place with 1-6 slates.
In other men's results, the dethroned Blue Eagles' pair of Marck Espejo and Ish Polvoroza bid their season goodbye with a 21-14, 21-16, triumph over DLSU's Cris Dumago and Wayne Marco for a 3-4 slate while sending the Green Spikers to a 1-6 finish.
Ruvince Abrot and Geric Ortega of UE went home winless after dropping its seventh straight, 10-21, 14-21, to Adamson.
