STANDARD-BEARER. Afril Bernardino and NU remain a class of their own in UAAP Women's Basketball.

A quadruple-double, or even just anything that comes close, is a rarity in basketball – but that was just what Afril Bernardino did on Saturday at the MOA Arena.

After all, a 39-game winning streak is a rarity in basketball – but that was just what National University claimed also on Saturday at the MOA Arena.

Behind the reigning MVP’s 22 points, 10 assists, 11 steals, and seven rebounds, the Lady Bulldogs toyed with University of Sto. Tomas to the tune of 54 points, 103-49, to finish a first round sweep of the UAAP 79 Women’s Basketball Tournament.

The two-time champions blasted off with a 24-8 opening salvo and never looked back. Five of their players were in double-digits led by Gemma Miranda who had 24 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

NU’s dominance proved to be end-to-end as they limited their opponents to 14 points and below for all of the four quarters. Asked if this was their best game of the season, coach Pat Aquino answered, stating the obvious, “Probably, yes, because of the lead.”

On the back of the 54-point blowout, the Lady Bulldogs swept the first round for the third straight season. They have now triumphed in all of their last 39 outings.

Meanwhile, Far Eastern University also ended the first round on a high note after prevailing over University of the Philippines, 56-52.

Precious Arellano scored 11 points to lift the Lady Tamaraws to 2-5.

With their respective losses, the Tigresses dropped to 2-5 and the Lady Maroons dropped to 1-6.
