Vito grants Manuel’s wish for more than one win

YOUR WISH IS MY COMMAND. Gelo Vito wasn't letting down his team captain Jett Manuel.
The University of the Philippines only had one win to show after the first round of the UAAP 79 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Now on his fifth and final season, Jett Manuel wasn’t having any of that. “(Our) mindset was we can’t settle for 1-6. I don’t want to leave my UAAP career with a one-win record,” he shared.
The Fighting Maroons didn’t make their team captain have to wait long and pulled off an upset of Katipunan neighbor Ateneo de Manila University on Saturday at the MOA Arena.
And in particular, it was Gelo Vito who took to heart their floor leader’s plea.
With their once seven-point lead cut into one inside the last two minutes, Manuel found an open Vito who didn't hesitate and buried the corner three that lifted UP over the Blue Eagles for the first time in seven years.
As it turns out, Vito, who was then only seeing extended minutes for the first time in the season, had all the confidence to take the shot all because of the player who made the play for him. As he shared, “Si Jett, he talked to us and said, ‘Sana nararamdaman niyo yung sense of urgency ko.’”
He then continued, “Kaya na-feel namin lalo na last year na nga ni Jett and we can’t let our seniors down.”
Nothing but glad that his teammates made his wishes come true, Manuel expressed, “I believe that we need someone to step up or everyone has to step up in order for us to win. I’m happy the team responded.”
He then continued, “I’m happy that Gelo stepped for us big-time.”
