HEIR APPARENT. FEU's go-to-guy still wears jersey #12.
Monbert Arong outwitted Alfred Aroga for a game-winner that lifted Far Eastern University over National University for the second time in just four days.
Faking out the Cameroonian Bulldog, the Cebuano Tamaraw cleared some airspace and rose for a wide open jumper that proved to be the difference between the two teams.
Not only was Arong clutch for taking and making game-winner, he was also apparently gutsy as he was playing hurt. As coach Nash Racela shared, “Actually, Monbert sprained his ankle. Buti na lang nung huli, nagkaroon pa siya ng lakas.”
Asked how exactly he willed the 2015 champions through the 2014 titlists, the graduating guard answered, “Wala akong masasabi kung hindi ang bait ni God. Wala akong laging binubulong kundi, ‘I can do all things through Christ.’”
He then continued, “Kaya confident ako na masu-shoot ko yung bola.”
Arong then went on to say that his game-winner actually played out just how he imagined it. “Alam ko nang mangyayari yun kasi yung tao ni Alfred, si (Ken) Holmqvist, yung nag-screen so alam ko nang magso-show siya,” he said.
He then continued, “Ang tendency, kasi seconds na lang, kung ‘di siya tatalong, ito tira ko. E tumalon siya.”
Now he has a couple of game-winners in his bag, one against NU and an earlier one against UP, FEU’s top gun confidently claimed that he now feels deserving to don the jersey number 12 – you know, the same jersey number 12 worn by this guy, Mac Belo. “Parang swerte rin yata yung number ni kuya Mac e,” he expressed.
As it turns out, it was Arong himself who took on the added pressure of wearing the same number as the one-time UAAP champion. “Naisip kong mag-change ako ng number kasi idol ko rin si kuya Mac,” he said.
And when Belo was in attendance during their matchup last Wednesday, he made sure to challenge his heir apparent to make him proud. “Nanood siya (last Wednesday). Sabi niya sa akin, ‘Wag mo akong ipahiya ha. Jersey number ko yan,’” Arong shared.
He then continued, “Sabi ko naman, ‘Basta laro lang ako kuya Mac.’”
