BETTER THAN THIS. Team captain Jett Manuel believes UP can still compete for a playoff berth.
At the end of the first round of the UAAP 79 Men’s Basketball Tournament, 1-6 University of the Philippines had shared possession of last-place.
And yet, the Fighting Maroons believed that their lowly record didn’t tell their whole story.
“The main thing that we discussed is that we believed we are better than 1-6. I really think that if we could have closed out games better, then we could have won a couple more games,” he said.
Once the second round began, State U went right to work in proving their coach’s claim correct.
At long last, showing poise to close out a contest, Perasol’s wards won against neighboring Ateneo de Manila University, 56-52, last Saturday – their first time in seven years to claim The Battle of Katipunan.
The big-time win did nothing but give UP a much-needed morale boost. Just at 2-6, however, they remain far away from the playoff picture.
Nonetheless, team captain Jett Manuel was adamant that the Maroons are even better than their two wins. As he put it, “Personally, I wanna reach the Final Four. I always want to dream big.”
He was quick to add, however, “But it’s not 100 percent in our hands. What we can control is how we’re gonna play in the next games.”
