CLUTCH. Jett Manuel had suffered a bit of cramps, but not before hitting a huge jumper late in the fourth quarter to help UP seal their third win in the UAAP Season 79 men's basketball tournament
Jett Manuel and Paul Desiderio each had 16 points, while rookie Javi Gomez de Liano added thirteen more as the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons picked up their third win in the UAAP Season 79 men's basketball tournament after downing Adamson University, 70-66, Wednesday afternoon at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Maroons overcame a slow start, with the Falcons outscoring them 20-9 in the first quarter. UP would turn the tables in the second stanza, holding the Falcons to nine points taking the lead by halftime.
A late-game run from the Falcons brought them to within four points with less than a minute remaning, but Manuel put any hopes of an Adamson comeback on ice with a cold-blooded jumper to make it 69-63 with just a shade over 25-seconds remaining.
Adamson big man Papi Sarr, who led the way for the Falcons with 18 markers, had one more chance to bring his team closer, but couldn't get it done.
UP held on for their second straright win to improve to 3-6 in the season for solo sixth place and matched their win total last campaign. Adamson meanwhile, dropped to 4-5 for fifth place.
"It was a great team win. a lot of people stepped up and we're happy about it." Manuel said after the match. "Ecstatic pa ako sa feeling na we had back-to-back wins."
And while Manuel is happy about their back-to-back victories, the lead Maroon is not about to let their streak get into the team's heads.
"We're gonna enjoy this win, but we have stronger, the strongest opponent coming up. We're taking it one win at the time."
Manuel added that their shooting for a spot in the post-season, something that has eluded the Maroons 1997.
