MAKE A WISH. Aldin Ayo, now 39-years-old, is the man responsible for DLSU's dominance thus far in the UAAP 79 Men's Basketball Tournament.
Aldin Ayo celebrated his 39th birthday by guiding De La Salle University to their ninth win in as many games in the UAAP 79 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Actually, celebrated isn’t quite the right term as according to the one-time NCAA champion coach himself, he doesn’t usually get to enjoy the day of his birth. “Hindi talaga ako nagse-celebrate ng birthday e. Kasi yung birthday ko, palaging may laro,” he shared.
Ayo played for Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the early 2000s before coaching his alma mater in 2015. As such, his birthdays always happened in the middle of a season.
The mentor of the Green Archers then went on to say that it’s also not the custom of his family to celebrate birthdays. As he put it, “Tsaka sa pamilya namin, hindi kami nagse-celebrate ng birthday. Nagse-celebrate lang kami pag fiesta, Pasko, at New Year.”
Nonetheless, the Taft-based team seemed to go out of their way to make Ayo have a good day. Employing “mayhem” to full effect, they forced 33 errors and quickly converted them into 26 points.
Asked if their latest win was some sort of birthday gift for their coach, all of Jeron Teng, Ben Mbala, and Aljun Melecio only said yes. Assistant coach Paolo Sauler also added, “It’s always nice to get a W on your birthday.”
