NO MATCH. Defending champion NU re-asserted their mastery over runner-up Ateneo.

Another win for National University, another flirtation with a quadruple-double for Afril Bernardino in the 79th Season of the UAAP Women’s Basketball Tournament.

The reigning MVP collected 27 points, 10 rebounds, six steals, and five assists and the two-time defending champion turned the supposed Finals rematch with Ateneo de Manila University into a mismatch, 80-56, on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Lady Bulldogs got going right from tip-off, but only blew the game wide open through an unforgiving 26-4 second quarter that turned a six-point lead into a massive margin of 49-21 at halftime.

Bernardino, of course, showed the way, but definitely wasn’t alone as Gemma Miranda and Jack Animam backed her up with 34 points, 17 rebounds, and five blocks combined. “The ‘Big Three’ played good again for us,” a satisfied coach Pat Aquino said, stating the obvious.

The latest win was NU’s ninth in a row in the tournament and 41st overall dating back to 2014.

On the other hand, their runners-up from a season ago are still struggling and now find themselves in a 3-6 hole.

Meanwhile, Adamson University rose to solo fourth after pecking University of the Philippines, 67-60.

The Lady Falcons now stand at 4-5 while the Lady Maroons now stand at 1-8.
