UAAP Season 79 swimming competitions opens tomorrow
Reigning MVPs Jessie Lacuna and Hannah Dato hope to lead Ateneo in completing another championship double as the UAAP Season 79 swimming competitions opens tomorrow at the Rizal Memorial Swimming Pool.
The Blue Eagles, who tallied 563 points to capture a second straight men's crown last season, are tipped to win a fourth championship overall in the four-day meet.
Lacuna, a former Olympian who won seven golds last year, is still Ateneo's main man, as he will get a lot of help from Aldo Batungbacal, who shattered the long-standing 1,500-meter freestyle record held by National University's Cesar Palacios (16:55.53) with a new mark of 16:49.89 last season and Axel Ngui.
De La Salle and University of the Philippines are hoping to make an impact this season.
The Lady Eagles, meanwhile, overcame a late surge by the Lady Maroons to clinch a second straight women's tiara last year.
Ateneo, which is also eyeing a title overall in the distaff side, will not rely on Dato alone, but also on Raegan Gavino, who was named the Rookie of the Year last season.
Like Lacuna, Dato splashed to seven golds for her second straight MVP award.
The Lady Maroons and the Lady Archers will try to give the Lady Eagles a tough challenge for the crown.
In the juniors division, Ateneo is setting its sights of extended its reign in the boys division to 12 years behind Rafael Barreto, who reset the old boys' 50-meter freestyle held by Ryan Papa (24.87) in 1989 by recording a gold medal finish of 24.43 last season.
University of Santo Tomas is gunning for another girls title in the four-day meet.
