THE BETTER BLUE BIRD. Adamson topped Ateneo to seize solo fourth near the end of the eliminations.
Now nearing the end of the elimination round in the UAAP 79 Women’s Basketball Tournament, there is yet to be an overtime game.
Not anymore after both Adamson University and Ateneo de Manila University left their all on the Araneta Coliseum floor on Sunday, fighting over sole possession of fourth-place.
After four quarters and one extra period, it was the Lady Falcons who came out on top of the Lady Eagles, 65-64, to put themselves well inside the playoff picture.
The game almost didn’t need overtime as the Lady Eagles had a 13-point lead inside the last four minutes before Jamie Alcoy and Kristeena Camacho fronted a ravenous 15-2 rush that tied the tally at 57-all at the end of four quarters.
In the extra period, the two teams were still knotted at 62 with 51.9 ticks to go until Nathalia Prado’s steal led to a layup for a 64-62 Adamson advantage. Melissa Newsome and Alcoy shared splits from the stripe to cement the margin of victory.
Alcoy wound up with 16 points to show the Lady Falcons the way to a 5-6 record. “Sabi ko, we’re down by 10 tapos hinabol natin so these last five minutes, bibigay pa ba tayo? Let’s grab it na sinabi ko na sa kanila,” assistant coach John Kallos said.
Tied in the standings with their conquerors prior to the game, Ateneo are now at 4-7.
Meanwhile, the University of the East remained breathing down the necks of second-running De La Salle University via a 53-39 victory versus the University of the Philippines.
Love Sto. Domingo had 19 points and seven rebounds to propel the Lady Warriors to 7-3 and just right behind the 8-2 Lady Archers.
