University of Sto. Tomas kept its record clean after three outings in men's taekwondo.
Defending champion University of Sto. Tomas found National University a tough customer before carving out a 4-3 win to seize the solo men’s lead Monday in the UAAP Season 79 taekwondo tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym.
The Growling Tigers, gunning for a record 14th championship, are now the only unbeaten team in the season with a 3-0 record. On Sunday, UST opened its title-retention drive with a 4-3 squeaker over University of the Philippines and a 5-2 rout of Far Eastern University, with veteran Aries Capispisan leading the charge.
The Lady Bulldogs took the top spot in the women’s side after nipping the Tigresses, 4-3, for a 2-0 record.
NU dropped in a tie with University of the East in second place in the men’s division with a 2-1 card. The Bulldogs debuted with a 5-2 dismantling of the Tamaraws last Sunday followed by a 4-3 win over the Red Warriors Monday.
The Lady Maroons are running second behind the Lady Bulldogs with three wins to show in four contests. After opening its campaign with a 3-4 loss to UST, UP rebounded with a 6-1 crushing of defending champion UE, 4-3 victory over FEU and 5-2 tripping of De La Salle.
The Lady Archers, who prior to losing to the Lady Maroons have emerged triumphant over the Lady Eagles (5-2) and the Lady Tamaraws (6-1), dropped to third place with a 2-1 card.
Ateneo, which paraded its prized rookie and Asian Championship gold medalist Pauline Lopez, are locked in a tie with UST and FEU at 1-2.
Losing a lot of players from last season’s championship run, the Lady Warriors struggled as the Recto-based jins remained winless in two fights.
De La Salle is running fourth in men’s play with a 1-1 card, followed by FEU (1-2), UP (1-2) and Ateneo (0-3).
