THERE YOU ARE. Matt Nieto turned in the best game of his sophomore season against archrival and erstwhile perfect DLSU.
Coming off a promising rookie season, Matt Nieto was yet to have the same sort of success for himself now in the UAAP 79 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
When Ateneo de Manila University needed him the most, however, the second-year pointman finally came through.
Up against erstwhile perfect archrival De La Salle University, Nieto contributed 15 points, four assists, and two steals in 24 minutes off the bench – easily his best game of the season. “Sabi nila coach, I have to give my everything so ginawa ko lang yun,” he expressed.
This, after only averaging 4.6 points and 1.7 assists in 15 minutes on the floor.
The 19-year-old also spent much of his time locking down Green Archer gunner Aljun Melecio who started strong before missing the mark in the endgame. “Since grade school kasi, Atenean na ako so ang mentality ko, patay kung patay, palitan nang mukha kung palitan nang mukha,” he said.
Of course, it helped that Nieto knows a thing or two about Melecio as the two of them go way back from their days as archrivals in the Juniors.
In the end, however, the sophomore was unable to express his emotions at playing a big role in the Blue Eagles’ big-time win against their archrivals. “I’m speechless. Just thank God that we won,” he said.
