Can the towering Steve Akomo help UST turn things around after a disaster that is UAAP Season 79? (From the Varsitarian, UST's official student publication)
Literally the biggest part of UST's UAAP rebuild, at least for two years, Steve Akomo is raring to go for the Growling Tigers.
The towering Cameroonian reinforcement out of the University of Visayas will be making his debut to UST next season, hoping to quickly turn the school's fortunes around after a disastrous stint in 2016.
"The future of UST, what can I say is we better prepare for next year and doing better than this year," Akomo said Wednesday after the Tigers lost their 10th game in the regular season, tied for the most since 2010.
"That is the first goal that is in my mind, to help the team," the 6'9" center added.
Akomo got his start with the Green Lancers in Cebu's CESAFI, serving as one of UV's new anchors in the post-Greg Slaughter era.
After his Cebu playing days were over, largely because he played in commercial leagues after the Cesafi season ended, Akomo is headed to Manila to take the reigns from Karim Abdul.
"I'm happy to be here. I'm happy to experiment with the new things you know because Cebu and Manila is two different things. I'm just watching and learning," Akomo said who's present in all UST games so far in this transition season.
Eager to help the Tigers bounce back in Season 80, Akomo understands his role in UST this early and hopes that he can deliver in the two years that he has with the black and gold.
"Of course, every fan of UST want bigger things from me. But hopefully I will give my best and I'm being confident and I will just play hard," the 21-year-old said.
