The Baby Tams are off to a good start in UAAP Season 79 after taking care of La Salle Zobel, the Season 78 runner-up.
After getting swept by De La Sallen Zobel last year, the Far Eastern University Baby Tamaraws started the UAAP Season 79 juniors basketball tournament with a big win against their green rivals.
FEU-Diliman scored a 66-56 decision against the Junior Archers Saturday at the San Juan Arena, using a strong fourth quarter to pull away from the Season 78 runner-up.
Up by only three, 47-44, entering the last 10 minutes, the Baby Tamaraws bullied their way to their first win of the season, starting the year on the right foot.
Jack Gloria led FEU with 15 points on 56 percent shooting and also grabbed 11 rebounds while Xyrus Torres finished with 11, nine from beyond the arc.
After making it all the way to the Finals in Season 78 but losing star Aljun Melecio to graduation, the Junior Archers relied on a more solid effort but fell short nonetheless.
Astrolave Vista and Martin Romero scored nine points apiece for La Salle Zobel. Franz Diaz added eight off the bench.
In the first game, the Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eaglets survived a tough outing from the UST Tiger Cubs to also win their season opener, 79-73.
In a game marked by 14 lead changes and six deadlocks, Ateneo drew two huge efforts Samjosef Belangel and Jason Credo to pick up the win.
Belangel scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Eaglets while Credo added 15 markers.
Inand Formillos led UST with 16 points on an incredible 78 percent shooting from the field and also had 10 boards.
