THIRD TIME AND STILL WITH THE CHARM.
National University steamrolled to an 84-55 win over University of the Philippines on Tuesday at the Araneta Coliseum to jump straight into the UAAP Season 79 Women’s Basketball Finals.
It was the Lady Bulldogs' third straight 14-0 elimination round sweep, moving two wins away of capturing a third consecutive championship.
Reigning MVP Afril Bernardino led NU with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists while reserves Je-anne Canelo and Florymae Ceno chipped in 14 and 12 points, respectively.
The Lady Bulldogs have won 46 straight games dating back to 2014.
Meanwhile, De La Salle University, behind Khate Castillo's 22 points and Snow Peñaranda's 17-point, 16-rebound effort, beat archrival Ateneo de Manila University, 71-60, to secure the twice-to-beat bonus in the step-ladder semifinals with an 11-3 card.
Love Sto. Domingo tallied 25 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals while Ruthlaine Tacula added 17 markers as University of the East turned back University of Sto. Tomas, 64-58, to secure the third-seed in the playoffs.
Adamson University then got a lifeline on its quest for the last semis berth with a 57-53 win over Far Eastern University.
The Lady Warriors wound up with a 10-4 slate, while the Tigresses and the Lady Falcons ended up tied in fourth at 6-8. The playoff between Adamson and UST is set next week, with the winner taking on UE in the first step-ladder semifinals.
