Not last place is UE’s new target for this season
STARTED FROM THE BOTTOM. Yet again missing out on the playoffs, UE just wants to get for themselves all the good vibes that are still out there for them.

Not only is the University of the East yet again not in the playoff picture, it has actually found itself at the bottom of the standings in the UAAP 79 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

In another disappointing campaign, however, coach Derrick Pumaren has, obviously, began appreciating silver linings.

One of those came just in the nick of time for the Red Warriors who scored a feel-good 80-67 rout of University of the Philippines in their penultimate assignment last Sunday. There, a more than satisfied Pumaren expressed in his post-win interview, “We really played to our full potential today. Even though they made a run, we still kept our poise and our energy was there.”

It was only their third win in the season, but it was still a much welcome development for the boys from Recto as they are now no longer alone at the bottom of the standings. At 3-10 and still with one game to go, they already are half a game better than equally disappointing University of Sto. Tomas.

They may have long been out of contention, but Pumaren is adamant that he and UE are nothing but determined to go out with a bang. “Well, we got two games left, counting today’s game (against UP). Sabi ko sa kanila, we can salvage it and try to get the two wins,” he said.

He then continued, “Hindi man lang kami ma-last place, yun ang target namin. We want to end the season on a winning note.”
