NO DOUBT. Ben Mbala was more than 20 points better than his closest competitor in the MVP race.
De La Salle University may already have suffered their first setback in the UAAP 79 Men’s Basketball Tournament, but their man in the middle remained way ahead of the pack in the race for MVP.
More than 20 points ahead of his closest competitor, Cameroonian Ben Mbala ended the elimination round with 92.4 Statistical Points (SPs).
Mbala averaged 20.6 points in 54 percent shooting, 16.2 rebounds, 2.4 blocks, 1.4 steals, and 1.2 assists all while carrying the Taft-based team to a league-best 13-1 standing.
The 21-year-old led the league in points, rebounds, and blocks.
The race wasn’t even close with second-placer Papi Sarr of Adamson University only mustering 69.9 SPs.
Mbala’s teammate Jeron Teng was third with 57.3 SPs and he was followed by University of the Philippines’ Paul Desiderio (55.1 SPs) and Far Eastern University’s Raymar Jose (53.6 SPs).
Mbala is the first Green Archer to win the MVP since Don Allado in 1999.
