LOUD AND CLEAR. Adamson made quick work of defending champion NU.
Nazareth School of National University has reigned supreme in the UAAP Juniors Basketball Tournament by imposing their will.
Now in the 79th Season, however, the defending champions just had another team’s will imposed on them.
Starting strong and finishing fine, Adamson High School humbled the Bullpups with a wire-to-wire 80-67 win on Saturday at the San Juan Arena.
First-year player Encho Serrano introduced himself both to the league and the reigning kings by pounding in 12 of his 25 points in the first quarter. “Talagang pinaghandaan po namin kasi ‘to . Lalaban kami sa lahat,” he said.
Serrano outscored all of NU by his lonesome during the timeframe as the Baby Falcons soared to a 28-8 advantage they would never relinquish.
The Bullpups kept coming, of course, and still threatened at 54-57 entering the final frame until Carl Tamayo and Gerry Abadiano connived for a 17-7 tear that established a 74-61 advantage for Adamson inside the last three minutes.
John Lloyd Clemente finally got going in the last two minutes, but by then, the Baby Falcons were well on their way to a 3-0 start to the season.
Abadiano and Tamayo scored 13 and nine points for now the only undefeated team in the tournament.
Clemente and Winderlich Coyoca still had 16 points apiece, but combined for 13-for-27 shooting and 10 turnovers to see NU trip to 2-1.
