GDL breaks through as first UAAP Jrs. Player of the Week
FUTURE. Juan Gomez de Liano is at the forefront of UPIS' quest to barge back into the Final Four at long last.

Juan Gomez de Liano is one of the two Mythical selections from a year ago who have a chance to do even better now in the UAAP 79 Juniors Basketball Tournament.

And just three games through the tournament, the hotshot guard of the University of the Philippines Integrated School is wasting no time in making his presence felt.

Gomez de Liano averaged 22 points in 60 percent shooting, 10 rebounds, four assists, and 1.5 steals in the Junior Maroons’ back-to-back wins.

More than the gaudy numbers, however, the younger brother of Fighting Maroon Javi has led UPIS into a share of second place. It’s still early, but it’s already the school’s best beginning in recent memory.

For his and his team’s strong start to the season, Gomez de Liano was recognized as the Player of the Week from November 14 to 20, besting Adamson High School’s Encho Serrano and Nazareth School of National University’s Winderlich Coyoca.

At 2-1 and with victories versus last year’s runner-up De La Salle Zobel and University of the East, UPIS finds itself alongside defending champion Nazareth School of National University and fellow Final Four team Far Eastern University-Diliman.

Rookie coach Paolo Mendoza has UPIS playing more confident, but it will be all for naught if it wasn’t for the eye-popping talents of Gomez de Liano. “My motto has always been, ‘No one will outwork me,’” he expressed, full of confidence.
