From Juniors MVP to Seniors Rookie of the Year – the transition seems to be seamless for Aljun Melecio.
De La Salle University’s pointman is poised to win the top honor for a first-year player.
Adamson University’s Jerrick Ahanmisi topped all first-year players in Statistical Points (SPs) with 44.5. As per league rules, however, he is not a true freshman – meaning, he did not enter college right after high school.
“Adamson notified us that Jerrick stopped for one year before entering college, making him ineligible for the Rookie of the Year,” DLSU board member Edwin Reyes said.
Next in line with 36.6 SPs, the recognition will now fall into Melecio’s lap.
Just like everybody, the recruit out of De La Salle Zobel was nothing but surprised. “Nagulat nga ako e. ‘Di ako makapaniwala,” he expressed.
Nonetheless, the Juniors Season 78 MVP made a good account of himself in his rookie year in the Seniors with averages of 8.4 points and 2.4 rebounds.
Melecio follows in the footsteps of teammate Andrei Caracut who took home the award a year ago.
