Archers paint town green with majority of individual awards
GREEN-MINDED. Ben Mbala, Jeron Teng, and Aljun Melecio - all from DLSU - were big winners on Wednesday.

De La Salle University was the most dominant team in the elimination round of the UAAP 79 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

And it has shown all the way through the league’s individual awards.

Ben Mbala was officially recognized as the Season MVP on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.

More than 20 points ahead of his closest competitor, the Cameroonian ended the elimination round with 92.4 Statistical Points (SPs). He averaged 20.6 20.6 points in 54 percent shooting, 16.2 rebounds, 2.4 blocks, 1.4 steals, and 1.2 assists all while carrying the Taft-based team one win away from the championship

Along with the MVP, he was also hailed as the PS Bankable Player of the Season and the Huawei MVP of the Season. He was also DLSU’s Kopiko Recharged Player.

Joining Mbala in the Mythical Team is fellow Green Archer Jeron Teng. Rounding out the selections are Far Eastern University’s Raymar Jose, University of the Philippines’ Paul Desiderio, and Ateneo de Manila University’s Thirdy Ravena.

Among first-year players, it was also DLSU’s Aljun Melecio who reigned supreme.

The recruit from De La Salle Zobell was tops in terms of SPs with 36.7 SPs to take home Rookie of the Year.

Aside from that, Melecio was also recognized as the Manulife Up and Coming Player of the Season and the Huawei Rookie of the Season.

The other awardees are Isaac Go (Ateneo) for the Chooks-to-go Sportsmanship Award and Appeton Most Improved Player of the Season as well as Jerrick Ahanmisi (Adamson University), Anton Asistio (Ateneo), Prince Orizu (Far Eastern University), J-Jay Alejandro (National University), Bonbon Batiller (University of the East), Dave Moralde (UP), and Louie Vigil (University of Sto. Tomas) for the Kopiko Recharged Player of the Team.

Over at the Women’s, Afril Bernardino of NU claimed her second straight MVP.

Joining her in the Mythical Team are teammates Gemma Miranda and Jack Daniel Animam, UE’s Love Sto. Domingo, and DLSU’s Snow Penaranda.
