University of the East and National University faceoff in UAAP Season 79 women's volleyball opening day.
National University and University of the East cross paths in the curtain-raiser of the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament opening day playdate Saturday at the Big Dome.
Opening serve is at 2:00 p.m. and will air live over ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23 and ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166.The game is also on livestream.
Towering Jaja Santiago leads the Lady Bulldogs quests to erase a disappointing fifth place finish last year.
The versatile 6-foot-5 hitter’s leadership will be tested this season with NU head coach Roger Gorayeb opting to field an 11-woman lineup.
Helping Santiago are Jorelle Singh, Aiko Urdas, Audrey Paran and Joy Doromal.
Setter Jasmine Nabor will play a huge role for the Lady Bulldogs with high expectations on her and Santiago’s offensive chemistry. The duo powered the NU to back-to-back V-League Collegiate Conference titles during the offseason.
Meanwhile, the Lady Warriors hope to carry the inspiration of their lone victory in Season 78 to change their fortune after years of disappointments.
UE closed last year’s campaign with a straight sets victory over Adamson University that snapped a 58-game losing streak.
“(‘Yung panalo to close last season) nakakadagdag sa amin ng confidence at tumaas ang morale naming,” said fourth year player Shaya Adorador. “Ginagawa naming motivation ‘yun to motivate each other and to lift ang sarili naming para ‘yung goal namin maabot naming.”
Adorador will have the support of Judith Abil, Ange Dacaymat and libero Kath Arado.
Lady Warriors coach Francis Vicente’s gamble of converting 6-foot-1 Roselle Baliton to setter from middle hitter will be tested against NU.
