National University opens its quest for a second straight men's championship, while De La Salle sets its sights for a three-peat in the women's division as the UAAP Season 79 chess tournament opens this weekend.
The Bulldogs take on University of the Philippines at 12 noon on Saturday and University of Santo Tomas on the same time on Sunday at the Henry Sy Sr. Hall inside the La Salle campus.
The Lady Archers begin their campaign against Ateneo at 12 noon Saturday and Far Eastern University on the same time on Sunday.
NU won its third men's chess title overall but the first since 1986 last season, thanks to the brilliant efforts of IM Paulo Bersamina, who took home the Rookie-MVP honors.
The Bulldgs collected a 14-round total of 42.5 points to defeat the Growling Tigers, which placed second with 36 points, and the Green Archers, who tallied 29 points in third.
De La Salle, led by Season 78 MVP WIM Bernadette Galas and Rookie of the Year WFM Marie Antonette San Diego, pooled 42.5 points to bag its second straight title and sixth overall, the most in the league.
The Lady Archers overcame the Lady Tamaraws, who were bridesmaids for the second consecutive season with 38 points.
FEU-Diliman, meanwhile, sets the motion for another juniors title against UST on Sunday after drawing a bye. John Marvin Miciano won the MVP honors last year for the Baby Tamaraws.
