Kim Malabunga of National University stops the attack of University of the East hitter Edward Camposano.
National University turned back University of the East in straight sets, 25-23, 25-10, 25-19, Saturday to open its 79th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the Big Dome.
The Bulldogs banked on Bryan Bagunas’ 22-point explosion to start their campaign on a high note as NU bids to reclaim the crown they last held three seasons ago.
Season 78 rookie of the year James Natividad chipped in nine points, skipper Francis Saura had seven while Kim Malabunga and Madzlan Gampong scored six each for the Bulldogs, runners up in the previous two seasons behind Ateneo de Manila. Setter Kim Dayandante showed a lot of promise filling the void left by veteran playmaker Vince Mangulabnan with a season debut of 36 excellent sets.
The Warriors’ woes continue with another loss to open their season, bringing UE’s losing slump to 29 straight.
Edward Camposano, the rookie of the year award winner two seasons ago, finished with 14 points while Noel Alba had nine for UE. Samuel Lelic, whose stint last year was cut short because of a harrowing ankle injury, scored three.
