Adamson University and University of the Philippines clash to open their season.
A more experienced and intact University of the Philippines tests the mettle of a young Adamson University Lady Falcons side on Sunday in their UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball match at the Big Dome.
With just one player leaving bolting out after last season, the Lady Maroons are one of the title favorites but their pre-season billing is yet to be proven inside the court.
The Diliman-based based will go under the microscope against the unpredictable Lady Falcons starting 2:00 p.m. where the winner of the match will join Ateneo de Manila and National University on top of the standings.
Action will air live over ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23 and ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166 and via livestream.
UP ended a 13-season Final Four drought last year and finished fourth with three top young guns in Season 78 Rookie of the Year Isa Molde, Diana Carlos and Justine Dorog providing the much-needed firepower to help veterans Kathy Bersola, Nicole Tiamzon and libero Princess Gaiser, who are all now playing in their last year for the Lady Maroons.
With the experiences they gained from last year, the Lady Maroons marches into the season brimming with confidence and potential to go all the way to quench the State University’s thirst for the crown it last held almost three decades ago.
They will face an untested Adamson side that lost three veterans in setter Fenela Emnas, Mylene Paat and Erika Alkuino but will have a new system under American head coach Airess Padda with the help of former UAAP stars and champions Michele Gumabao, Cherry Macatangay and Angeli Tabaquero.
UP head coach Jerry Yee knows that the Lady Falcons are capable of pulling a surprise, especially with Adamson looking to erase the memories of a disappointing campaign in Season 78. The Lady Maroons will approach the game with caution.
"(We’ll play them) very, very cautiously kasi bago ‘yung coach,” said Yee. “I'm sure iba ‘yung style from what we've seen before. Mas maingay ‘yan, mas mabilis ‘yan, mas lively ‘yung gameplay nila. Syempre mag-iingat kami."
Jema Galanza returns as the face of the Lady Falcons with veterans Mary Joy Dacoron, Anwarlyn Mohammad and Jellie Tempiatura providing stability for a team filled with new faces.
