De La Salle begins its title-retention bid with a straight sets win over Far Eastern University.
Repeat-seeking De La Salle University had a good workout in a straight sets victory over Far Eastern University, 29-27, 25-22, 25-23, Sunday to open their campaign in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Big Dome.
The Lady Spikers found the Lady Tams a tough customer in an early rematch of last year’s Final Four match, needing a good run closing run in each set to put FEU away.
Season 78 Best Blocker Majoy Baron was ruthless in front of the net with 15 points coming from nine kills, three kill blocks and three service aces for the Taft-based squad. Last year's Finals Most Valuable Player Kim Dy scored all but one of her 11 markers from attacks while graduating setter Kim Fajardo had 35 excellent sets and four points for DLSU.
"Nag-step up si Majoy. Nag-step up si Kianna (Dy). Wala naman kaming ibang aasahan pa," said Lady Spikers coach Ramil De Jesus.
DLSU, which lost most of its veteran core last year, joined early winners Ateneo de Manila, National University and University of the Philippines.
The Lady Tams squandered a golden chance to extend the match, recovering from 20-22 deficit with two straight points only to give away two points off their errors in the Lady Spikers' finishing 3-1 spurt that was capped by FEU's Heather Guino-o's attempt to return the ball that fell short.
Bernadeth Pons scored 12 points while Jerrili Malabanan and Toni Basas combined for only 13 markers in a quiet outing for the Shaq Delos Santos-mentored FEU, which committed 38 errors.
