Naglagay sila ng program head for all sports so para bang ngayon parang tinatanggal na nila ang term na ‘team managers’ -- Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles team manager Tonyboy Liao (left, sitting)
Long-time Ateneo de Manila University women’s volleyball godfather Tonyboy Liao cleared that he remains to be the Lady Eagles team manager but with a different flow of work following the new direction set by the university’s athletics office.
ABS-CBN Sports caught up with Liao after the Lady Eagles’ 25-20, 25-21, 25-22 win over University of Sto. Tomas to open the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Big Dome and he explained the all the confusions on his position and tenure has been ironed out.
Liao said that he is still the team manager but this time he will be having a specific role and will be reporting to the school’s program head for volleyball Sherwin Malonzo on all the plans of the squad. The program head will then be reporting to the University Athletics Office.
“They were telling me that they want it to go to a new direction, na sinabi doon na wala na raw team managers kundi program head. Program head na ang tawag per sports. Mayroon pa ring team manager pero parang magre-report ako sa program head,” he said.
“In short ako, ang mga coaches at mga players kung ano ang mga plano sasabihin ko sa kanya (program head) tapos ire-report niya sa opisina, sa UAO. Parang ang lumalabas ngayon ako ang representative ng UAO sa team,” Liao further explained. “Let’s say itong team kapag may problema sila sasabihin nila sa akin, sasabihin ko sa UAO. Kung may gustong sabihin ang UAO sa team sasabhin sa akin, then sasabihin ko sa team.”
According to Liao the athletics office has decided to put program heads on each sports that will oversee their affairs.
“Naglagay sila ng program head for all sports so para bang ngayon parang tinatanggal na nila ang term na ‘team managers’ which I think started this season or it will start next season. I’m not really very sure,” he said.
ABS-CBN Sports during the holiday break last December interviewed Liao, who was then on a vacation in San Franciso, California, to clarify the rumors that he was already on his way out of the team.
He said that he’s still the team manager but if the rumors were true coach Tai Bundit could be heading out of the team also after this season as courtesy to Liao who recruited him four years ago. Long-time assistant coach Parley Tupaz left the squad before the start of the season.
“Ang nangyari doon when I returned from the States, nag-usap kami sa opisina and I was asking them ‘Ano ba ang nangyari? Kasi lumabas sa mga dyaryo na wala ako.’ Hindi nila alam kung saan nanggaling ‘yung source,” he said.
“When I was in States tinawagan ko ang president, si Fr. Jett (Villarin, SJ). He was caught unaware and he was also surprised na bakit ganoon,” Liao continued. “So sabi niya don’t worry you will still remain the manager. Let’s just settle this after the holidays. Kaya nga after the holidays nag-usap-usap kami tungkol d’yan.”
Liao was with the Lady Eagles during their training camp in Japan last month.
Liao was the main architect of the successful women’s volleyball program of Ateneo de Manila, turning the Lady Eagles to title contenders. His work paid dividends when Ateneo captured two straight titles in Season 76 and Season 77 behind prized recruit Alyssa Valdez.
