UAAP Football Roundup: ADMU, FEU score opening weekend wins
Former champions Far Eastern University opened Season 79 with a big win over UST, Sunday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Jarvey Gayoso scored a brace while two others chipped in to help the Ateneo Blue Booters dismantle the Adamson Falcons, 4-0, Sunday evening in the opening weekend of the UAAP Season 79 men's football tournament, at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Gayoso, the league’s reigning Best Striker, got things going early for the Katipunan side, scoring four minutes into the match.

Things didn’t get any better for the Falcons in the second half, as Ateneo struck three more times, with Iñigo Herrera and Samuel Lim each scoring a goal of their own, while Gayoso scored once more for his first brace of the season.

The Falcons had no answer for Ateneo’s offense, as they drop their first match of the season, while Ateneo shoots up to the top of the standings early in the season.

Earlier that day, the Far Eastern University Tamaraws kicked the season off with a big 2-0 win over the University of Santo Tomas Tigers.

New sophomore team captain Val Jurao scored off a mishandled free kick in the 31-minute mark of the first half, while fellow sophomore striker Rico Andes doubled the Tamaraw cushion just three minutes later.

UST pushed the pace in the second half, but couldn’t mount a comeback, as the score stood at the end of regulation.

Following a disappointing Season 78 campaign, the Tamaraws begin Season 79 in impressive fashion.

Double Draws Highlight Opening Day

Saturday’s matches both ended in exciting draws, as National University came back to hold University of the East to a 2-2 stalemate, while defending champions University of the Philippines and De La Salle University figured in a scoreless draw.

A promising rookie last season, Mar Diano gave the Red Warriors their first goal of the season 14 minutes in, while Bon Opeña added another in the 26th minute for a 2-0 lead early on.

In their first game in the post-Paolo Salenga era, the Bulldogs looked to be headed for an opening day loss, until Patrick Valenzuela and Lawrence Colina both converted in the 82nd and 87th minutes respectively to erase the Red Warrior advantage.

NU and UE start the season with a point each.

Wasted chances were the story of the day's second match as UP and La Salle were both unable to come up with conversion in their season opening contest, resulting in a goalless draw.

UP and DLSU both come away with a point each early in Season 79.
