Slow start, super wala kaming receive, tapos sila super ganda ng defense nila today -- Bea De Leon Ateneo de Manila's four-set loss to National University.
Bad start, misreceives and Jaja Santiago.
These were the problems Ateneo de ManilaUniversity failed to solve Wednesday in the Lady Eagles’ 17-25, 13-25, 25-19, 27-29 loss to the National University Lady Bulldogs in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
“Slow start, super wala kaming receive, tapos sila super ganda ng defense nila today,” said third year player Bea De Leon. “Naging factor na angat sila, sobrang baba namin, hindi talaga kami nakahabol.”
The Lady Bulldogs snapped a six-game losing slump against the Lady Eagles in their UAAP head-to-head that dated back in Season 76 stepladder semifinals. NU handed Ateneo its first loss of the season after a dominating win against University of Sto. Tomas.
Ateneo was cold in the first two sets, trailing by as much as 9-20 in the opening frame and were in danger of absorbing a sweep after another 10-point hole in NU’s domination of the second set.
Six-foot-5 Santiago was a nightmare in front of the net, scoring 26 points. She was unstoppable with 19-of-32 attacks, six kill blocks and an ace.
Ateneo had no answer.
“You saw the scores, she scored 26,” said De Leon, who had 14 points with four coming off kill blocks. “Sobrang kahit talunan mo siya, kahit bantayan mo siya, kahit i-double block mo siya, sobrang mahirap siyang ma-stop.”
The Lady Eagles were able to extend the match and were even ahead, 12-4, in the fourth frame before NU made a scorching rally to tie the set at 23. Ateneo saved four match points but a crucial service error by setter Jia Morado and a perfectly timed kill block by the Lady Bulldogs’ playmaker Jasmine Nabor on Michelle Morente sealed the one-hour, 45-minute match.
“Obviously, NU is a great team and they're full of veterans, addition pa si Risa Sato, she's from Japan so the play there is always super fast,” she added. “Wala, ganoon lang talaga. It’s just breaks of the game, and they played a lot better today.”
Ateneo dropped to 1-1 win-loss slate tied with their opponent on Sunday Far Eastern University.
