Lady Bulldogs clip Lady Eagles for solo lead
National University climbed to solo top spot with a four-set win over Ateneo de Manila.

National University have had enough of being on the losing end of its UAAP head-to-head match against Ateneo de Manila.

The Lady Bulldogs made sure that they’d end their 6-game slump Wednesday.

They just needed to recover from squandering a two-set match lead.

NU clipped the wings of the fiesty Lady Eagles 25-17, 25-13, 19-25, 29-27, to collect its second straight win and a hold of the solo lead in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Towering 6-foot-5 Jaja Santiago, power hitters Jorelle Singh and Fil-Japanese Risa Sato spearheaded a huge comeback from a 12-4 deficit early in the fourth to a thrilling windup that saw NU hold five match points before putting Ateneo away with a huge kill block by setter Jasmine Nabor on Michelle Morente.

Santiago uncorked 19 kills and was an intimidating figure in front of the net coming up with six of NU's 14 overall kill blocks for a total of 26 points to lead NU. Singh had 16 markers with 11 coming off attacks while newcomer Sato, who was supposed to play fot Ateneo before transferring to the Lady Bulldogs, scored 12 with four coming off kill blocks.

Nabor had 43 excellents sets on top of her eight points, holding her own against Ateneo's veteran playmaker Jia Morado, who had 40 perfect sets.

"Lumabas nu'ng first two sets. Di ba lagi ko namang sinasabi na kapag naka-recieve kami delikado sila sa amin. Noong third set nawala yung receive, eh nadi-discourage kaagad sila, yun ang problema ko. Ang bilis nilang na-discourage noong third set," said a relieved NU coach Roger Gorayeb. "Buti na lang noong fourth set (bumalik). Ang laki ng hinabol namin 12-4. Masaya ako para sa mga bata."

The Lady Bulldogs, who last won against the Katipunan-based squad back in the second round of eliminations of Season 76, will face Adamson on Sunday.

Bea De Leon led the Lady Eagles with 14 points while Jho Maraguinot finished with 12 markers. Morente finished with 11 points, Kat Tolentino got nine points while Morado dished out 40 excellent sets for Ateneo.

Ateneo, which started its winning run against NU in the last stepladder phase of Season 76 with the Lady Bulldogs holding a twice-to-beat advantage, dropped to 1-1 tied with its opponent on Sunday Far Eastern University.
