BROKEN CHAIN. UST will have one less starter in its do-or-die game.
University of Sto. Tomas will be close to full strength when it meets De La Salle Zobel in a do-or-die matchup for the fourth and final playoff berth in the UAAP 79 Juniors Basketball Tournament.
Only Rayjhun Baquial was found to be in violation of league rules after an on-court scuffle prematurely ended the Tiger Cubs’ game against University of the East last Friday.
As such, Baquial, a regular rotation player, will be forced to sit out when the Espana-based squad wages war against the Junior Archers on Thursday at the San Juan Arena.
Witnesses said that things got too heated between a UST player and a Junior Warrior and the two came to blows. Many players then stormed the court.
Fortunately, after a while, game officials and security personnel were able to separate the squads. The league, represented by commissioner Rebo Saguisag, then decided to end the game then and there.
After replay reviews, the UAAP found that Baquial had direct “involvement in a fight.”
As for UE, Saquisag said, “Fuller investigation ongoing. A lot involved and no need to rush.”
With only bench player Baquial facing suspension, UST will have most of its weapons when it guns for the fourth and final playoff berth.
