National University's Jasmine Nabor is just on her first year as a setter for the Lady Bulldogs.
Yet the sophomore is now slowly making a name for herself as the missing piece for NU, which for years has struggled to find the right setter to maximize their hitters and 6-foot-5 Jaja Santiago.
On Wednesday, she held her own against multi-awarded setter Jia Morado of the Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles in NU’s 25-17, 25-13, 19-25, 29-27, win in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan that put the Lady Bulldogs at solo lead with 2-0 record.
The 18-year-old Nabor even outplayed Morado, the Season 77 Best Setter, in their first head-to-head match as setters in the league.
Nabor, who was converted into a setter from a hitter, had 43 excellent sets with eight points including the match-clinching kill block on Michelle Morente.
She had three more excellent sets compared to Morado, who defeated her as Best Setter during the 13th V-League Collegiate Conference that NU ruled for the second straight year.
The win not only put NU on top of the heap with a perfect 2-0 win-loss slate, it also snapped the Lady Bulldogs’ six-game UAAP head-to-head losing streak to Ateneo which started back in Season 76 stepladder semifinals.
“Last year hindi namin sila natalo tapos hanggang V-League lang (kami nananalo sa Ateneo),” said Nabor, whose squad swept Ateneo in the V-League Collegiate Conference Finals.
The Lady Bulldogs take on the listless Adamson Lady Falcons on Sunday.
