Ateneo drops NU to claim top spot in UAAP Football
Mario Ceniza (16) scored late in the second half to help Ateneo beat NU, 3-0, Thursday.
Rookie Sam Lim scored in injury time of the first half, while reigning Best Striker Jarvey Gayoso converted on a penalty to help Ateneo de Manila University down National University, 3-0, in UAAP men's football action, Thursday at the Moro Lorenzo Football Field in Ateneo.
After using last season to showcase his scoring prowess, sophomore sensation Jarvey Gayoso showed flashes of his playmaking, finding Lim for the late-first half conversion.
Things would get even worse for the new-look NU Bulldogs, as they opened the second half with Ross Lee Lawagan getting booked for a straight red card for a hit inside the box, leading to an easy penalty conversion for Gayoso.
Mario Ceniza would put the finishing touches with a 78th minute goal for a 3-0 final tally in favor of the Katipunan-based side.
It has been a dream start for the Ateneans this season, picking up two dominant wins in as many games, somethign that coach JP Merida credits to the team's bond and motivation.
"Okay yung bond ng team ngayon, yung players motivated sila, especially the rookies." Merida said post match. "Kaya nilang i-handle yung UAAP, yung pressure and yung demand sa loob ng field."
"Ang ganda nung sistema na nilalaro nila, and ine-enjoy nila yung system." Merida added.
The Blue Eagles improve to 2-0-0 for the season with six quick points to claim the top spot early in the season.
