STAYING ALIVE. The old reliables showed the way for DLSZ right back into the Final Four.

Staying true to how its campaign in the UAAP 79 Juniors Basketball Tournament has gone, De La Salle Zobel remains fighting for dear life.

Nonetheless, the fact of the matter is, last year’s runners up are still fighting.

The Junior Archers bought themselves another new lease on life after getting the better of equally determined University of Sto. Tomas in a 72-65 decision on Thursday at the San Juan Arena.

Graduating players Joaqui Mariano and Jan Sobrevega got together to bring DLSZ out of the do-or-die matchup for the fourth and final playoff berth.

In particular, it was Sobrevega who scored the booming triple and daring layup that punctuated the 8-0 burst that ballooned a nine-point lead into its biggest at 28-11.

The Tiger Cubs had a couple of runs to cut the lead into single-digits, but the Junior Archers just were not letting go of their ticket into the Final Four.

The boys from Alabang were in danger of missing out on the next round a year after placing second. However, Adamson High School’s forced forfeiture opened a door into the Final Four.

The DLSZ veterans were only more than willing to kick down the door. Mariano ended the day with 17 points and six rebounds while Sobrevega chipped in 14 markers.

The task only gets tougher from here, however, as the fourth-seed will next face defending champion and top-seed Nazareth School of National University.

The Bullpups will own a twice-to-beat advantage when they and the Junior Archers figure in a rematch of last year’s Finals on Tuesday still at the San Juan Arena.
