Andes strikes twice as FEU runs through Adamson in UAAP men's football
Sophomore Rico Andes (7) scored a brace while team captain Val Jurao (29) added a goal of his own to help the FEU Tamaraws charge through the Adamson Falcons.
Sophomore striker Rico Andes scored in each half while skipper Val Jurao and Dominique Canonigo both added goals of their own as Far Eastern University steamrolled Adamson University for their second straight win in UAAP men’s football action, Saturday evening at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Looking to bounce back from their opening weekend loss, the young Adamson squad came out aggressive and had two early chances at goals but couldn’t get anything to fall.
Seven minutes in, it looked as if the Tamaraws had gotten on the board with a Jurao conversion, but it was later wave off due to an offside violation.
Ten minutes later, Canonigo made sure there was no offside call as he blasted the ball into the left post and banked it into the back of the net for the Tamaraws’ first goal of the match.
Andes added to the FEU cushion in the 39th minute, while Jurao closed out the half with a conversion of his own in injury time to send the Tams into the midgame break with a comfortable three-nothing advantage.
Andes would hit one more time midway through the second half to put the game on ice and send the Tamaraws to a 2-0-0 slate in UAAP mens’ football.
“Isa na namang magandang araw ito, especially para sa akin and sa FEU community, kasi nakuha namin yung second straight win,” Andes told ABS-CBN Sports post-match.
Senior midfielder Paolo Bugas also touched on the team’s adjustment with the new coaching staff, saying that they still haven’t mastered the system yet, but it’s getting there.
“Sa bagong system namin, nag-aadjust pa kami, pino-process pa namin, may mga ibang players na hindi pa naiintindihan, pero maganda naman yung adjustment, kasi nung first half, marami kaming goals pero hindi natuwa yung coaches namin. Sa Second half, one goal lang pero at least nagawa namin yung pinapagawa ng coaches namin. Natuwa naman sila sa performance namin ngayon, and we’re looking forward sa next game namin against NU.”
With the win, FEU joins Ateneo at the top spot with two wins and six points each, but the Blue Eagle booters hold a slight edge with a +1 in goal difference.Adamson on the other hand, absorbs their second consecutive four-goal defeat.
