Ateneo scored a big opening win against University of the Philippines in UAAP Season 79 women's football action.
The Ateneo women’s football team kicked their season off with a bang, scoring a big opening day win over defending champions University of the Philippines, 1-0 in UAAP Season 79 women’s football action, Saturday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Nona Amoncio struck early for the Lady Eagle booters, scoring five minutes into match, and they would never look back.
The Diliman side tried to fight back and get one back with some good looks late in the match, but ultimately couldn’t mount a comeback and the Ateneans held on for the early victory.
Later that afternoon, University of Santo Tomas opened their Season 79 campaign with an exciting 2-1 win over Far Eastern University.
After a tight first half, action picked up in the second half of play with Hazel Lustan scoring UST's opening goal in the 56th mark.
Charisa Lemoran doubled the Tigresses' lead just five minutes later, giving the España-based squad a bit more breathing room.
Jovelle Sudaria made things a bit more interesting in the 77th minute, pulling one back for the Lady Tams in the form of an unstoppable free kick conversion.
With around a minute left in regulation, the Lady Tamaraws were gifted a penalty when UST was called for a handball violation inside the box.
Sudaria couldn't recreate her earlier sucess however, as her penalty attempt was saved.
With their wins, Ateneo and UST are tied at first place with one win and three points each.
