Outgoing setter Kim Fajardo (middle) will try to lead De La Salle to its second straight victory.
Defending champion De La Salle University hunts for its second straight win and a share of the lead in a showdown with the wounded University of Sto. Tomas Tigresses Saturday in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Game time is at 4:00 p.m. and game will air live over ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166 and via livestream.
The Lady Spikers are tied with University of the Philippines with 1-0 win-loss record behind league-leading National University (2-0).
DLSU passed its first acid test in a rebuilding season after losing six players from last year’s roster including their Big Three Ara Galang, Mika Reyes and Cyd Demecillo. The Taft-based squad needed to overcome a tough opening set before dropping the feisty Far Eastern University, 29-27, 25-22, 25-23, last week to open the season.
Majoy Baron and Kim Dy shouldered most of the scoring with setter Kim Fajardo to lead DLSU in their last game but head coach Ramil De Jesus expects his other players to step up too especially against the very dangerous Tigresses, which defeated the Lady Spikers in the University Games on their way to the title during the off season.
“Kasi noong natalo kami wala si Fajardo, malaking bagay kasi si Fajardo una kasi nakakapagbigay siya ng morale boost sa kasama and leader,” said De Jesus. “So siguro ibang usapan ‘pag UAAP. Offseason kasi siguro testing sa team ‘yun eh. Hpefully makabawi kami.”
The Tigresses are itching to bounce back from a 25-21, 25-21, 25-22 defeat at the hands of Ateneo de Manila last Saturday.
EJ Laure, Cherry Rondina, Chlodia Cortez and Ria Meneses will once again spearhead the fight of the Espana-bsed squad.
Laure and Rondina scored 17 and 10 points, respectively, the last game but Cortez and Meneses were quiet against Ateneo.
