University of the Philippines eyes its second straight win and a share of the lead.
University of the Philippines takes on an upset-conscious University of the East looking for a share of the lead Saturday in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Maroons, parading an intact and a more experienced lineup swept Adamson University in straight sets, 25-18, 25-11, 25-18, last Sunday to jumpstart their campaign.
But UP, which hunts for its second straight win to join early leader National University (2-0), is expected to face a tough challenge when it returns to the court at 2:00 p.m. The game will air live over ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166 and via livestream.
The Lady Warriors are not the same pushover team as last season that lost 58 games straight.
A much-improved hitter Shaya Adorador unleashed 21 points the last time out with 6-foot-2 converted setter Roselle Baliton showing a great promise as UE’s main playmaker.
Though the Lady Warriors lost, 25-18, 20-25, 23-25, 13-25, to the Jaja Santiago-led NU last Saturday, the fight they gave against the Lady Bulldogs earned them respect.
“Ngayon ang ibang mga teams nag-iisip na ‘yan laban sa amin at nandoon na yung mentality ng mga bata na lalaban at lalaban sila,” said UE coach Francis Vicente.
A point shared by UP mentor Jerry Yee.
“Ang tatangkad ng mga 'yun. Very much contrast sa mga naging kalaban namin (sa first game). Matatangkad 'yun and hindi natin pwedeng i-underestimate 'yun sa net defense nila,” said Yee.
The Lady Maroons mentor will bank on veterans Kathy Bersola and Nicole Tiamzon as well as Isa Molde, Diana Carlos, sette Arielle Estranero and libero Justine Dorog, who is expected to hold the fort in floor defense with veteran libero Princess Gaiser still uncertain to see action after skipping their last game because of a back injury.
